Why People Drink

Prohibition, which lasted from 1920 to 1933 was one of the biggest disasters to hit the United States.  It was just as ineffective as current drug laws are today and made all the wrong people rich.  The reason Prohibition even saw the light of day was because alcohol was seen as the root of evil because it “ruined families.”

Upper classes enjoyed their port, brandy and other drinks.  Lower classes often drank too much and caused chaos.  In 1920, the middle class was not firmly established.  There were a lot of poor people who lived in tenement projects who had come to America from other countries.  Their lives were bleak and very difficult.  They lacked adequate shelter, clothing and proper food.  They worked long hard hours for little pay.  To ease the misery, they drank.

No one ever questioned why they drank.  The decision to take away the cure instead of treat the illness was a poor one.  Gradually, laws changed that gave the poor a chance rise above their situation.

People still abuse alcohol today and the abuse ruins lives and families.  Today, however, we realize that finding out why someone drinks and targeting the illness instead of the symptom, is much more effective treatment than banning alcohol.  Mark Houston Recovery is a drug and alcohol rehab center in Texas that can help you or your loved ones recover from drug or alcohol addiction.
