The Pros and Cons of Using Aquarium Rocks
Hobbyists have varying views with regard to using aquarium rocks. While some maintain that these are used only as ornaments and that they offer no significant benefits to the health of the fish, some aquarists think otherwise. Before deciding which side you would like to take, consider the following information:On the one hand, aquarium rocks allow you to simulate the ocean floor or riverbed (the majority of hobbyists have freshwater fish tanks). Some sources say that rocks keep the fish from seeing their reflection in the aquarium bottom and, hence, becoming disoriented. On the other hand, if you opt to use rocks, you are also making your already-sensitive water condition more unstable, thus, exposing your fish to greater risks. Some rocks, such as dolomite, limestone, and marble, have calcium deposits that raise the pH and hardness of the water. Sharp rocks, which may graze the fish, should be avoided as well. If you really want to use rocks, your best options are granite, quartz, slate, and sandstone
