Isn’t a budget for my family just a waste of time?
Since I’m running a family budget website, I get this question all the time. People are interested in the idea of taking control of their personal finances with the help of a budget, but then when they actually have to sit down and write all thier income and expenses down - which really isn’t that hard or time consuming, they ask if it is really necessary.
Like I mentioned, keeping a budget isn’t hard, it’s just a habit you need to get yourself into. The reason so many of us find it uncomfortable to keep a budget is because we have to face financial reality. It’s easy to tell yourself that you’re doing great and could get yourself out of debt in no time when you’re not facing the numbers. When you do, it gets a little scarry at first. It’s not easy to realize that yes, it will take you years to pay off all this debt, but avoiding this discomfort will get you nowhere and once you get started you’ll feel better seing that mountain of debt shrink each month.
