It’s quite simple actually, photo comes from the Greeks and the meaning is light. Voltaic comes from Alessandro Volta which was one of two who discovered the forerunner of batteries. So voltaic means electricity or current.
Photovoltaic means light electricity or electricity produced by light. A photovoltaic panel is a device that transforms sunlight into electricity.
Pretty easy huh? Well, It’s a bit more complicated how these PV cells work. Basically they use a semiconductor the has the property to catch photons of light and then use them to power electrical devices such as a calculator or a light bulb.
