The Presence and Dangers of Lysteria Monocytogenes

Drinking raw milk or “supposedly” pasteurized milk posts some danger because of the virulent pathogens that can be lurking in the innocent-looking creamy white fluid. One might think that simply keeping milk cold and refrigerated would also prevent the existence of dangerous bacterium. Unfortunately, lysteria monocytogenes is such a particularly virulent attacker that can survive temperatures as cold as 3 degrees C. Found in both domesticated and wild animals, some birds, some fish and shellfish, and even the soil and silage, this bacterium can be lethal for some members of the population. In the United states alone, over 500 people will die annually as a result of being infected. Treatment with drugs such as penicillin is the normal procedure and usually has good results.
